Description

The Red Prince Group consists of two unpatented lode claims at 10.33 acres each, the Red Prince and Red Prince Tunnel No. 1. These claims were originally staked by the Mayor of Manhattan, George Grill, in 1887. After his death in the Black Hawk Mine located a quarter mile away, Edward H. Hall took over the claims. Significant development and capital went into the mine, but high shipping costs to send ore to Denver ultimately ended the development. Included in the images below are newspaper reports from the Red Prince Group. Descriptions are from the time period and are not guaranteed to be accurate. These clippings are our best source of information about this specific mine as it has remained closed since the early 1900s, and no other reports have survived to the modern day. At the time of these publications, gold was valued at $20 per ounce so to convert from dollars/ton divide by 20 to get ounces/ton.
